Well, the United States is not the first empire to desire more power, and since you are moderately decent with your history you already know that.
Man has mistreated his fellow man since the beginning of time. The reactionary idea of penalizing this type of behavior to me seems in it's effectiveness very similar to waging a "war on terrorism". The problem we now face as all humans is that never before have the stakes been any higher in regards to resolving all of our mutual misunderstandings. Therefore I think the "penalty" as you say, will ultimately be decided by all humankind because the world may be permanently altered or destroyed before this particular question is even close to answered.

I hope I am wrong...

OK in order Yes to the Indians, ownership of land was unknown to their culture. Mexico, Yes we leased the land they claimed ownership and them stole it, in the Mexican-American war. Much the way the Mexicans are taking back southern California, Texas and Arizona. Hawaii...I don't know. ....No, Japan wanted to dominate the pacific rim and expand there empire. Pearl Harbor was used as "bait" to enter the war. The only thing in common between the the a-bomb drop and the Holocaust is that millions of innocent people died. Stolen property......I suppose. ManifestDestiny.....what?.... The Iraq war is to divide and destroy the middle east leading to WW3 leading to the bankrupting of the United States. WMD's are good for two things....preventing military invasion and scaring people into giving up there freedom. They will not destroy our planet or the solar system. The penalty,......there is never any penalty for the elite but death and economic enslavement for the rest of people. Until there is a revolution. Could the people ever win a revolution against today's weapons?

1: Indians,Mexicans, Hawaiians, Yes,No,Maybe
2: Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor.Maybe
3: Manifest Destiny, that was from East coast to West Coast, or the Pacific, so maybe.
4: Stolen Property: perhaps, some could claim it as spoils of war, some could argue that, effectively.
5: Mass Murder, yeah, we did that also.
6: Solar System, I am not certain on that and scientists are not either, see Planet Pluto/?
7: Penalty: In order to establish a penal code one would have to define Justice and Wrong. these concepts have been a matter of debate since written language has been recording the slanted events of humankind.
We are on the MAD plan, Mutually Assured Destruction is a kinda screwy way to exist, but it is the only fog of war that we have come to understand as a reality.

How: It is the standard US practice, make a treaty of friendship and trade with the friendly natives, then steal it by declaring ownership using the courts and congress to pass laws that say it is the property of the US (kinda like possession is 9/10 of the law). Why: Imperialism suported by Naval supremecy. The Navy build up was always the intention. Hence the Spanish American war occuring in the Phillipines. Native Americans are well aware of the similarities that occurred to Native Hawaiians. There is a spin (and a bit of irony) to this occuring today allowing government agencies to confiscate private land from its owners and selling it to the highest bidder. Sort of 'going around and coming around'. And now they do it to their own. For the ignorant: history has a way of repeating itself, and by the answers in this column there are a lot of blissfully ignorant historians (?) out there.

those are some heavy questions. Yes the US stole the land from the Indians by passing treatys and then reniging on those treatys. Mexican land was not neccessarily stolen it became the US's in the form of spoils of war. As for the Hawaiians, the US basically coerced the Queen of Hawaii to allow the US to annex the islands. People who live by the sword die by the sword, or in essence you reap what you sow.

The Indians were never a nation and owned no land. Tribes drifted over temporary hunting grounds, built nothing, then invaded other tribes' hunting grounds in endless, pointless, bloodthirsty savagery. "Use it or lose it" is the only sane and fair law of Nature. These Neanderthal-like creatures hogged the land that should have belonged to men who could do something with it. That was done.

The penalty for being an American is the fact that we are obliged and willingly tolerate ill-informed, uneducated delusions such as this. The good old USA isn't perfect, never has been and never will be, however, the very fact that you can freely express yourself here is proof that it is a better society than most. Oh, incidently, the USA being in possession of so called WMD is the sole reason you are free to question our nation's motives, and in reality, has shaped the western world as we know it today.

We came.
We saw.
We kicked their butts and took their land.
Humans have been doing that to one another for thousands of years. We dont owe the indians a thing for taking their land. Most people forget that the indians could have easily defeated the white man if they hadn't been so busy fighting each other as well as us.
