My friends dog was killed but we don't know how. We believe he was poisoned. But what kind of poison, if poison, could have caused the death. And, can any household products be used as poison to kill animals, like big dogs?

OMG, yes. I remember hearing about people killing dogs with anti-freeze.

Lots of commonly available household products can and will poison a dog. Automotive antifreeze tastes sweet to a dog, they will drink it if available, and it will kill them. Some cleaning products are dangerous around dogs. Even too much chocolate will sicken or kill a dog (not usually big dogs, but certainly the smaller breeds.) Maybe you should ask a vet to do an autopsy to find out for sure.

There;s hundreds of different poisons that will kill a dog. Antifreeze is easily ingested by dogs and no one had to give it to them. If some one has a leak in their radiator or has recently filled it, a dog will go and just lap it up. If they could have gotten the dog to the vets as soon as something was wrong, they might have been able to save him. Antifreeze's toxins is reversible if gotten to the vet in a few hours after ingestion. Other poisons however aren't treatable.

For anyone with a cat, antifreeze poisoning is not treatable, sorry. I lost 5 cats few years ago due to a cruel neighbor. No she wasn't prosecuted because I didn't see her do it.

The only way you can get the EXACT cause of death is to tell your friend to have a vet do a necropsy on it.And why do you ask if any household products could kill a big dog? You're not thinking about poisoning one are you? I definitely hope not!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most popular poison is probably anti-freeze. It has a sweet taste and left out, an animal that drinks this dies a very hard death. It is sad that people do things like this. Humans are the only species that murders for no reason. We aresometimes a sad lot.

if your friend thinks his dog may have been killed by someone he should be calling the police now. yes people will put poisions out to kill dogs sick stupid people do that.
the thing is that its not just awfull and illegal to set out poision for animails it is too dangerous. Here in Ontario i have heard of a few times where the police had to close parks because someone had put poisoin out . the dogs sure they can get it but so can any other animail and Children .
you really should contact the police another reason is that the sick people that harm animails when they are young very often are people who later go on to become some of the very worst criminals in our society.
yes many household things will kill a dog or a child even a grown up . so get your friend to call the police or if you need to call them yourself.
a dog can be examined after death just like a person to determine what caused the death and so your friend may end up just learning that his dog died from something natural and that will put him at ease . better still his actions may save more animials from harm and even save peoples lives. call the police

A tablespoon of anti-freeze can kill a dog, or other pet. If the dog found some, perhaps in a driveway on the ground, that could do it. Apparently it has a sweet taste. Some manufacturers are adding a bittering agent but this has not caught on with most.

Sorry about the dog.

It's best to have the pet send the animal out to be autopsied. There are too many products out on the market today to kill a dog.
