Throw him in Leavenworth and throw the key away. He voluntarily joined the military, accepted his commision as an officer and swore to protect the constitution and execute his orders to the best of his ability. I have zero sympathy for him. He is a disgrace to the uniform he wears. His execuse that it is an illegal war is pure BS. Congress voted in a bipartisian way to authorize the use of forece in Iraq.

Next case.

I agree with what everyone has written, we had this discussion at work just the other day, not about him, but the same general topic. What I would like to add, since I do have 2 kids in the military, its a long time ago the slogan was Uncle Sam Wants You....You joined because you were to serve your country. Now, that is on the bottom of the list to get you to join. They use "Job opportunities" and "great pay and benefits", and "money for college" as a lure to get you to join....In this day and age, I think most people never dreamed we would actually have another war, then the gulf war happened, then 9/11....Now most people know what they are getting into when they join, that's why they are offering $$$ to enlist and re-enlist, and joining is at an all time low...Most don't want to fight a war that has a hidden agenda attached to it........and now they know after the Gulf war just exactly what that is.......He joined, and now he is in big trouble....I understand if he has a wife and kids why he would not want to go, he's only human....but he is government property, so......?

I think that he should have thought about going to war before he joined the Army. Being in the Army means serving your country. I was in the military and served in Iraq and I personally don't "support" the war, but I care about the safety of my family. After all, once you sign those papers, you are "government property." He should be punished. It's not a choice, besides, he chose to join the Army.

The military have a wonderful after retirement benefit package. I rather think this is what he thought about when he joined. Then, the awful truth of how he would have to earn the benefits, by risking his life dawned upon him when he was ordered to Iraq. It then occurred to him why veterans got these benefits and it didn't seem like such a good deal anymore.

I come from a military family. My father was an officer and I find this man disgusting. Wolsey once wrote on the results of a court martial that "It is a monstrous theory that an officer can abandon his men in the face of the enemy under any circumstances." And this is what he did. He deserted his men when danger threatened. He is a coward and a disgrace to his uniform.

He signed the contract to serve in the US military, to support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. To follow the orders of the Commander in Chief. He could have put in for a conscience objector status, but he decided to make a statement in uniform. Have fun in Leavenworth.

He decided he wanted to be in the Army fully well knowing the possibility of being called to war. Whether you agree with the war or not doesnt matter. Its a great disrespect to refuse to fight for your country when you have volunteered to do so.

I think it's one thing to have a personal opinion on the "war" in Iraq, but if it is your job to serve in the military, then you have an obligation to go where they send you. Just like a lot of American's don't support the war, but support the troops who are in Iraq doing what they pledged to do. Whether it's really protecting OUR country or someone elses. . . is another story

I understand he's attempting to make a point but he enlisted.....he needs to be prepared for whatever the Army throws at him. In no way am I for this war...but if you enlist, you need to be prepared for this sort of thing. He should be held accountable.
