about eight years ago we had two inches and the area around portsmouth literally came to a standstill. Is it worth me setting my alarm tonight or should I leave it and have a lie in? ( if the roads and transport system are going to implode due to the snow widely forecast for tonight)

In all honesty...none. I live in Raleigh, NC and so far twice in the last three weeks, schools etc. have been canceled due to the threat of snow.

About a year ago, the entire area was paralyzed after an unexpected 1/2 inch snow fall. The roads became impassible and even (the few) sand trucks were unable to make it through stalled traffic.

Many people ended up staying overnight at schools and work. My high school kid spent over 6 hours trying to drive home...only 4 miles way. He finally walked the last 2 miles.

I grew up and learned to drive in Boston...but I've learned that down South...when it snows...forget driving. I stay home.

But I agree with Deb C. (below.) I love the South and am a taxpayer...so I don't see my city having to pay a billion dollars for snow removal equipment that we'll use probably once a year...if that. 99% of the time, the snow melts the next day.

About 7 years ago we had two feet of snow. It shut down the entire area for over a week.

(I imagine that it's the same for Portsmouth, U.K. as it is for Portsmouth, Virginia, U.S.A....which is also considered to be "down South!)

In answer to your question, it's not the amount of snow, it's the ignorant drivers in the snow. LOL I grew up in NC and I have seen people slid off the road from not knowing when to let off the gas and they would spin out into a ditch. The only difference in the north and the south is when the north gets a snow fall, with all the hills and sharp curves, they have an excuse to stay home, but when a "snow flake" falls here, they close the schools. LOL

I've lived in the south my entire life. We don't have the equipment for clearing the roads, it's not economically sound for something that rarely happens. If it's going to be bad and it's in the evening, forget about it. They will shut things down, no doubt about it. If it's in the daylight, you can usually figure on at least a mid morning delay until they can get some of the streets cleared. Have a rest and don't worry! :)

LOL...I have lived in many places. But to be fair in the south they don't have the same equipment as the north.
