Why do people feel obligated to thumbs up or thumbs down an answer that is an opinion? Now, if its a factual based question and answer, and someone gets the facts completely wrong, I can sort of understand...but an opinion?
How do you feel about it?

Thank you all for your opinions...I will leave the judgment of this question in YOUR hands.

When I have given an example culled from experiences in my life, about anything...no one has the right to tell me that my experiences are worth that thumbs down.

Who's your favourite author/book? Thumbs down on that one.
What procedure do I follow in the unexpected death of a relative at home? Thumbs down there too.

We are all different. With a lot of different opinions. And I absolutely agree that our giving our opinions should never earn us either a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Our opinion just IS.

Maybe the Answer Gnomes should think of taking the thumbs up and down option out for the answers as well as the questions. They replaced that feature with the star thingy for questions. Should they use something similar for the answers?

If it's a ridiculous answer, if it's rude, or if it's irrelevant, I give it a thumbs down. If it is really bright, I give it a thumbs up.

If it is just an opinion that is neither awful nor wonderful, I don't touch it.

As long as its used properly, the thumb is a great idea.

Well, if you get the best answer and you get thumbs up, they give you 1 point for every thumbs up you get up to 50.

An opinion is just that. An opinion. People can agree or disagree. A fact is indeed, as you stated, a fact, and must remain so. However, up or down, opinions are open to agreement or disagreement. And really, who cares about a rating anyway?

I think that is stupid...I see what you're saying about the factual stuff...but not an opinion that is just stupid...

Yes, you are just expressing your opinion of their opinion.

What's the big deal anyway? Thumbs up/down are fine.
