When you are pregnant and you see something cute. The big stuff you might get at a baby shower.

When you're around 6-8 months. These days most people have an ultra sound and know what they are having, boy or girl, so you can purchase appropriate colors. If you don't know, buy neutrals that will work for both and just have a couple boy outfits and a couple girl outfits just in case.
A bit of advice on buying baby clothes. Baby clothes are expensive if purchased new, I found the best and funnest thing to do was go to a nice thrift store and buy sleepers there. I got more for my money, could have both pink and blue and lots of them. You will of course need to wash anything you buy either new or used. I put mine in big ziploc bags after washing.

If you know the sex of the baby you can always pick up a cute thing you see when ever you are out shopping. If you are planning on having a baby shower you will recieve TONS of clothes (even if you don't register for them). After your shower look at what people gave you and then go get the items you think you need more of. A great time to do this is if you need to return something you were given. I would recommend having most of what you need one month before you are due incase of any unforseeable circumstances. (Remember: some moms get very tired the last few weeks before they deliver so you probably don't want to be out shopping when you're tired, swollen and ready to pop).
Good luck and have fun!

Really, as long as you buy gender neutral stuff, you can buy it as early as possible. I started buying stuff kind of early so that it wasn't a huge expense in the last couple of months. I tried not to buy anything until I was at least 12 weeks (past the major risk of miscarriage). After that I bought a few things here and there, mostly if I found them on sale really cheap. We also got a lot of stuff for Christmas. After 20 weeks when we found out it was a girl, we started buying more stuff. We started buying furniture around 27 weeks, and I have the nursery almost all set up now (I'm 29 weeks, 3 days now). There is still a decent amount of stuff to buy, but a lot of the big stuff is taken care of. I'm not going to buy much more until after my baby shower though.

After the first trimester, when the risk for miscarriage drops. If you plan to find out the gender, then you may want to wait until you do so you can buy boy or girl stuff. If this is your first baby, be sure to make a registry of stuff for you baby - someone will probably throw you a shower, so you will get a lot of your baby stuff then. After the shower, then you can finish buying what you need.

For gender neutral stuff, as soon as you want.

If you want to do gender themed or have a risk of miscarriage, you may want to hold off on most items until the second trimester begins.
Also, if you expect a baby shower (or two) is going to happen, it'll likely be better to wait until you've gotten a handful of gifts to actually buy stuff yourself. Then you can just fill in with the stuff you didn't receive and avoid things you got plenty of.

I would wait until 5 to 6 months so that you know what your having, and try to buy more 3-6 months clothes because they don't last long in the 0-3.

I started buying things for my baby right when I found out what it was. I was one of those parents who wanted to know the sex of my baby ,,just so I could be prepared before the baby got here!

first of all dont buy anything untill youve had a baby shower. second if you are waiting to see if its a boy or girl dont buy too much untill you know, but dont rely on that too much. i found that waiting until about my 6 or 7 month worked out pretty well because most people had stopped giving gifts by that point. however feel free to buy that really cute toy or outfit you saw at the store, as im sure you have, even if it becomes unusable you can always return it.

well if u are finding out what u are having then u can wait until your ultrasound when they tell u the sex. If u are waiting until the baby is born to know the sex, u could just go buy things that are unisex. I started getting things when i found out what the sex was with all mine.good luck and God Bless
