There is a trade off between fitting a large number of songs on or getting fewer songs with better fidelity. Both MP3 and WMA are "lossy" compressions - which is to mean both "discard" information that the software considers insignificant. The more you compress songs ( lower bit rate ) the file size gets smaller but fidelity suffers. With either MP3 or WMA, the recommendation is to not go lower than a bit rate of 128kbps so as not to reduce fidelity to the point in which it becomes very noticeable.

However, if you really want to fit in more songs, you will need to experiment to see at what point the difference is apparent. It is possible you could encode at 64kbps or possibly even lower and be very happy - and be able to fit more songs on your player!

If you want to fit more songs on, go for WMA. WMA is half the size of MP3 at a similar quality.

You will also have to decide on quality v quantity. Encode at 64 kb/s WMA for quantity.

I believe mp3 files are a little smaller than WMA, so you could probably fit more of those on you mp3 player...

Use Windows Media Player to Rip and Encode to MP3 format.
You can choose the bit rate to encode at. Quoted capacities are based on average track length and lower bit rates. If you want quality sound, you will get less tracks, If you want quantity of music, then you will have to compromise on the quality.
