it really depends on your level! on my desk now I have
orielly's ajax hacks
and
pro javascript techniques by John Resig ( http://ejohn.org )
and then realize that nobody does ajax by themselves! we use libraries the hide the browser incompatibilities and make great ajax!
I use http://jquery.com and ajax is a breeze!
