What is the best phone to use in Egypt? I want to use it for phone calls and sms. Which phone is most reliable there? Also, what would I need to take with me for recharging? I understand that electrical outlets are different there than in the States. Egyptians, if you have any word of advice, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

Hey there,
First, do NOT get your phone from the States. (I mean the phone itself) Phones in Egypt as well as in Europe use the GSM System which differs from that in the US.
When you come here, get yourself a cheap phone. Then, you have two options; either choose the pre-paid card system (which is advisable if you're staying for a short period) or the line system, which is only recommended for residents.
So, if you're only coming for vacation, choose the pre-paid card system.
There used to be a special system in Mobinil for foreigners visiting Egypt. I don't knwo if it's still available. It's called "khat el zowar" which literally means "line of the visitors". You can check if they still have that.

I was just in Egypt last summer and I used my own cell phone there. I called my phone company here in the U.S before I left and got an unlocking code from them (The phone has to be tri-band/international). When I got to Egypt, I unlocked the phone and I just bought a SIM card. It's free to receive calls, and I think SMS cost about half a pound (egyptian currency). U can buy an adaptor to use w/ ur phone charger but it wouldn't charge fully as it does here. If u can't take ur own phone, u can rent a phone and a line while u are there. There are cell phone shops almost on every corner. I heard that one of the phone companies in Egypt has a small booth at the Cairo international airport and u can get something called a "vistor's line".

Any kind of phone works with GSM and 220 volt charger with 2 poles. That was for the phone now for the lines. The best is to buy the visitor line which works for a limited time, but if you may come regularly the normal prepaid card and it's line will be better all of that was (Mobinil) there is also Vodaphone and the third company will start like in 1 or 2 months with new offers we don't know yet about.

Cellular phones here are cheap. So you can buy the phone and everything here. Unless you are a fan of "accessories" like cameras, polytones and stuff like that. If all you care for is a basic phone for calling, answering and sending messages, then wait till you come here and it is going to be really cheap. Like you can get yourself a good phone with its charger for 50 dollars.
About the company, we have only 2 companies and they offer many services. If you are looking for the cheapest. I suggest you choose "Mobinil" with " Alo Elsehre" service.
