I have wireless internet at my house. My laptop is normally about 3ft. from the modem. My connection speed is normally 54Mbps but it quite frequently drops to 24Mbps which makes it almost impossible to use my remote desktop connection to a server in Pa. If I go to the little computer symbol in the lower right corner of my screen, right click and repair the wireless connection, it always comes back to 54Mbps. But that gets frustrating to do that constantly. What should I do?

The problem occurs at random. I tried connecting my laptop to the modem with a cable - didn't help. I do have an old 900mhz cordless phone at my desk and a 2.4 in a different room. The drop in speed occurs even when nothing else is in use - no phone - microwave etc.

could the 2.4 phone even if it's in the cradle in another room?

Change your default channel. You could be having problems with your wifi frequency being stepped on by a neighbor's wifi using the same default channel.

Other things as mentioned, baby monitors, cordless phones, microwave ovens and other electronic devices that broadcast or transmit in the 2.4ghz frequency range.

Could be a lot of things, even the electrical wiring in your home could possibly interfere. Try changing your routers Wireless Channel, is it a Modem/router? Most routers run at 2.4Ghz so, your phone could be the interference, the base of your cordless phone sends out like a sorta broadcast telling the receiver (the part you talk into) that it is there. I know cause I can hack them, check the antennas on the back of your Modem/router and make sure they are properly secured (screwed on), make sure your modem/router isn't too close to other electronics, TVs, PlayStation 2s, much of these electronics create interference. Could be quite a few things, I don't know much specifics on how you have these devices placed. You may even be able to purchase larger antenna (for your Router/Modem), or your wireless adapter or Modem/Router might be defective or damaged.

If you are only 3 feet away, buy a network cable and plug your computer in with it.

While this may not be your problem, you should get rid of any wireless phones not operating at 5.4Ghz. Get rid of baby monitors and other wireless devices.

(By "get rid of," I mean unplug and see if it helps).
