be honest with them- if you didn't study enough admit to it and change. if your truly having difficulties in the subject- tell them that and ask if they can get you a tutor, help you etc.

be prepared for a fight- if you really just let your other lifestyle practices get in the way of school- you are to blame and should take the consequencial damages and responsibly act.

on theother hand if you did honestly give 100 percent and still fail- then attempt to get help. if the parents are of none- go to the teacher and work within the confines of school for tutors.

having flunked a lot of math tests I will tell you the best thing to do is be honest. Say, Mom, you know how you say I don't study enough? Well, I think you might be right, because I bombed on my math test. Can you help me with my study habits? Maybe you will even get your parents to get you a math tutor. Is there a math tutoring program in your school with older students? Math is difficult.

I am sorry Sweetie. I tell my boys to be straight forward and honest with me at all times.......If your parents are in the habit of saying mean things to you instead of being adult and not willing to work it out with you they have big issues.....You will have to prove to your parents that you will study more and try harder......Show them you are truly sorry you failed and you will talk to your teacher and see if you can retake the exam make an effort so they can see you are trying......Good luck.

First warn them you are going to tell them. Do so letting them know how you feel first.

Like... "mom, dad... I have to tell you something. It is hard because I feel aweful..."

Mostly tell them the truth.

2... if you didn't study hard enough... tell them that too... basically whatever is the truth... and pre-emptively give them all their arguments before they know what it is you are going to hit them with...

They may be mad but it will definitely help them not be so argumentative... since you agree with them...
