Satellites are unpiloted and are used for many purposes. There are weather satellites which are used for taking pictures of weather in Earth's atmosphere to predict and view weather. There are remote sensing satellites that take pictures to moniter natural rescources. They can monitor, oil, lumber, fishing, droughts, and metals such as nickel and gold. They also monitor crops and oil spills. There are also communication satelites which send signals to assist in television, telephones, internet connection, ect. The GPS sattelite (Global Positioning Systems) is used in programs such as Google earth to view other parts of Earth.

Something on the ground sends a message up to a sattelite, from their, it deflects the message to it's destination.
