Hit the sack can also mean having woohoo... I don't know why that term for sleep came around.

I think it means - go to bed. But of course - then - you'll go to sleep. I don't think you "hit the sack" in a chair - or in church - or whatever. It's not just falling asleep... It's going to bed - and then falling asleep.

Strictly speaking, it means 'going to bed', as in 'I am going to hit the sack' meaning, as I said, 'I am going to bed'..........
