I've tried everything and find killing them with traps is the only thing that has worked for us.

We use the traps that look like two horseshoes attached with a spring and lever. We bought them at Home Depot, the directions are pretty basic on setting them but I have some tips that have worked well for us.

The dirt you see is a 'pop up' the short run you see is only used to push dirt out of their usual runs, so setting a trap in a pop up has a lower success rate than setting one in a run. But it's a common rookie move to set the trap in the tunnel just off the pop up. Whe the mole is using that tunnel he is pushing a big wad of dirt into the pop up so the dirt usually sets off the trap and the darn mole escapes.

I have had more success setting traps in the lawn than in flower beds. I think it is because the soil is more compacted.

It has been hard to convince my husband to dig a hole where there isn't one, but my high kill rate has calmed him down. You can some times find runs next to a concrete slab, against an edging border or against the house.

I swear those moles don't know how to dig in a straight line, but if you have an area of heavy activity, use a long thin shovel to dig plugs out about 8 inches deep. Feel in there to find a run--a horizontal mole highway. Then make the hole wide enough to set in the trap. Put a clod of dirt in the middle of the run to rest the trap trip lever on--it makes the trap more sensitive.

Cover the trap with a bucket with a rock on top and check daily. If you catch one, be sure to reset the trap. There is always more than one. I have gotten a dozen in one area every year.

FYI, the runs are permanent, and riddle your yard. This is not a temporary or short term problem. Once you find a good run, remember where it is- you will be setting traps there at least once a year.

Good luck!

Evaluate Your Mole Problem

Got moles in your yard? Before you take any action, you need to evaluate your mole control problem.
Mole Control Checklist
How long have you had you mole problem
The area of your mole infestation
Why have you got moles?
How much will it cost?
How long will it take?
The legal side of getting rid of moles
Your personal preference & safety

How Long Have You Had Your Mole Problem?
If this is a problem that has been going on for years, getting rid of your moles now is going to be a tough job. If all your neighbors also have had the same problem for years, it gets even more complicated, because you have to think about coordinated action, and possibly shared cost.

The longer you have had moles in your garden, the more established they will be. The mole tunnels might well be very deep, and their nest might well be in a location you can't get to.

The area of your mole infestation
Experts say that a single mole can "hunt" over an area as large as 1.5 acres. Depending on where you live, there could be as many as 20 homes on such an area, so coordinating a "mole hunt" with so many neighbors might be a problem.

Why have you got moles?
There can be many reasons you have moles in your garden. You land might be bordering onto woods or farmland. A barrier might funnel moles to your property such as a road or river.

I tend to get the most mole activity just after local farmers have started plowing surrounding fields, and at the end of summer when they are harvesting. If I don't "treat" the problem fast, or deter the moles, they tend to hang around all year long.

Geeze, the guy wants to get rid of them.

Forget the gum. It simply doesn't work. Don't trample the tunnels or they will just tunnel more.

Go to the store, Wal Mart has it, and get some Mole bait/poison. It also kills other pests too.

The bait is in a cone shaped package. The package is used to bait the runs.

You use the pointy end to barely poke a hole in the tunnel and pour some bait in, then use a small stone or a dirt clod to cover the hole up. Don't damage the run or they will abandon it. Repeat the process several feet down, etc., etc.

I like to wait unit after a rain to see which tunnels are still in use, and bait them.

The stuff works great. I've used it several times in several of my rentals.

Good Luck

I have heard of the mothballs, but a surefire way is to cut the bases off plastic bottles and leave the caps off. You then dig them into the molehills with the wide end upwards. The wind blowing across the top makes a noise that apparently they cannot stand. Cheap and worth a try..............

I use bait that contains Warfarin. It comes in bars or bricks that you can cut into pieces. I take an empty coffee can with a lid, cut a small hole in the lid and put the bait inside. This protects the bait from the weather and other animals can't get into it. I place these cans in areas of my yard where the problems are.

Again once I used to be newly wed, we had the equal main issue but not as bad as you. I stupidly caught the hose in one gap and became on the water. I will have to also tell you that we lived on the prime of the local. Days later (forgot the hose was once on) as I soaked the entire neighborhood and my now ex-husband said was the most important water invoice he had ever obvious, this little bitty mole ran out of a gap and my neighbors canine grabbed it. I am not so definite that is excellent recommendation however will work.

The moles are there because there are insects in your yard that they are eating. To get rid of the moles, you need to get rid of the insects.

Suspect the insect of interest is grubs. Start with grub killer.

I had a mole problem once. I rented a steamroller and drove it all over my yard. That took care of the problem.

I'm not sure about the expense, but I think I'd want to go to a plastic surgeon but until then, stay out of the yard.

okay this one sounds strange but it actually works!
JUICY FRUIT gum. just chew up a big wad of juicyfruit gum and stuff it in the holes. they will try to chew it and it will get stuck and kill them all off.

this really works, i had a bad mole problem for years and someone told me this so we tried it and it really got rid of our problem without hiring an exterminator.
