when i turn the ignition i can hear the starter motor but it doesnt seem to be catching on to anything, sometimes after several attempts the car will start, it seems worse when the weather is cold. i want to know if there is anything i can try which could be causing the problem before i replace the starter as the one that i have at the moment is only 18 months old.
please could you explain in laymans terms as i am only a girlie, i am a skilled mechanical engineer but unfortunately i am no car mechanic.
thank you in advance

Before you start the car wait for the little yellow light to go off first, also check your plugs you should'nt need a new starter motor after just 18 months

a pre engaged starter by virtue of it's design cannot rotate untill the pinion is thrown foward and engaged in the ringgear if this fails to happen and the starter just whines i would suspect that teeth are missing from the ringgear to qualify this put the car in top gear with the handbrake off and push foward to rotate engine take out of gear and try again if it now starts replace ringgear

the problem could either be a sticking solenoid (this engages/disengages the teeth to turn the engine over) or the starter itself could be gunged up. a good whack on the starter motor with a hammer usually sorts it out. or if it doesn't engage put in first and rock the car forward and back this also could help.

your battery may be on the way out,the starting motor needs a good kick of power to engage onto the ring gear(the bit that turns the engine),if the car is fine when warmed up,sounds like the battery is losing an amp or so overnight.

Have you noticed white smoke, especially when cold? If so, it's probably the glow plugs. These warm the diesel so it can ignite, they often wear out but are cheap to replace.

It sound like the starter motor pinion is not kicking out ,and engaging the fly wheel, spray the pinion with easing oil .i think you will find that works.

It should still be under warranty as well if it's only 18 months old. Take it back to your dealer and get them to look at it for free.
