As a general rule, a telescope that advertizes its "magnification" is a lousy telescope. Any telescope can have any magnification--just put in a different eyepiece. But increasing the magnification of a lousy telescope will just make a small bright fuzzy blob look like a big faint fuzzy blob.

When buying a telescope, look for mirror size (bigger is better) and mirror quality (harder to determine) to give good quality images.

Around the beginning of May, Venus will be half-phase.

Look again around the beginning of July -- you'll see a nice crescent Venus.

Venus is gibbous right now which means it's between full and half full. You may be the victim of false advertising. You may have better luck when it's more of a crescent.
