The only way to get rid of a flea infestation is to treat the animal with Frontline Plus. Don't get it from your vet, they put a hefty mark-up on it, rather order it from an Internet based pet supply store.
Frontline will kill fleas at all stages of life. You must treat the pet once a month for this to work. You can't just treat once and expect that to fix the problem because fleas are all over your house in different stages of life.
Frequent vacuuming and cleaning of the pet areas will help with the treatment. Frontline also makes a spray that is very effective for carpets and upholstery, but that is a bit overkill.
It is really that simple, stick to the monthly treatments and the fleas will disappear.

I've used Raid flea bombs to control a severe infestation 11 yrs ago. I also use topical Bio Spot flea control on my dogs and cats. I bought Adams flea spray (vets, pet stores, and companies like Drs. Foster & Smith sell Adams), to keep them off the pets. Adams has a topical flea control product that I'm giving a try, since I love how other Adams products work. I've never liked flea collars, many cats including long haired ones have reactions to them. Fleas can be brought in on ourselves (they seem to know when there's animals in our home). Try the information below. Sometimes steps 1-9 need to be repeated in two weeks, but not always. Step 10 is for when all fails. Make sure you're also bombing the attic and basement, every room need to be done.
Flea bombs are the easiest to use.
1) treat the cats using a vet approved topical flea treatment - Frontline, Advantage
2) Raid flea bombs work great, get enough for each room in your home, check package for amount/size of room
3) use a spray to get under furniture, bombs don't always get everywhere.
4) once the cats been treated, gotten the flea bombs and sprayed under the furniture and cushins, open all closet doors and dresser draws, turn off the gas at the main valve (you may need help with this), turn heat off if possible or turn it down to about 55, remove all other pets, turn off fish tanks and cover with plastic tightly, get kids out.
5) cover your mouth and nose with a cloth or mask -respirator if you have one
6) starting with the furthermost room from the front door set each one off -make sure to point can away from your face. Go as quickly as you can and get out fast shutting the door behind you tightly.
7) wait at least 2-4 hours (whatever the package recommends). Still keeping your children and pets out, go and open up your house, turn on the heat- leave gas off for now. Fumes are too strong from bombs wait till smell is mostly gone. Uncover tanks and turn filters back on. Fumes usually take an hour or so and you'll be fine to bring all back in.
8) all counters, tables and other surfaces will need to be wiped down, wash bedding also.
9) vacuum, vacuum, and vacuum
10) if the above fails call in a professional
In the spring once the snow melts, your yard needs to be treated with something like Sevin dust or granules. Our yard gets treated starting in May. If you do it just before it rains, it'll absorb into the ground faster.
Well, if everything fails, get rid of all the carpet and put down tile, laminate wood, or wood floors. I can't stand carpet and I'm putting down tile in every room. It will make it so much easier on my allergies.

Try to find a spray that contains a flea killer and the ingredient PYRIPROXYPHEN a substance which inhibits the sythesis of chitin - thats what the outer shell of insects is made of. Whitout it the parasite dries out. It`s nontoxic for mammals and works up to 6 month in the house.
I don`t know if its available in the US, but you could ask your vet.
Also treating the cats is important!
Advantage or Frontline work well but there are resistancies, so if one doesn`t work for your cat switch to the other one
