I am aware that most national elections occur on the first Tuesday of November every other year. My question is why does the average american not care enough to look into what the government is doing until it is election time. You have to think outside the boxx sometimes people.

They don't. There are debates all year, every year. Read the newspaper. They're political debates going on every day. In the Senate, HoR, Dems vs. Rep, Citizens, new laws, court cases, everyone disagrees on everything.
Don't worry - Americans will always debate.

Space Ghost ... That's when American elections take place. The presidential election is every four years and the next one will be in November 2008. However, congressional elections occur on a different cycle depending on whether the candidate is running for the U.S. Senate or the House or Representatives. The term of a senator is 6 years, but the term of a representative is for just two years.

If you look at the link I've provided below, there's enough info to keep you busy for quite a while. Enjoy.
