This is as close as I think you're going to get to the original.

You might want to add some of the following ingredients:
Ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, chilli powder, piment and ground cloves.

I think the best Wurst to use is the S&W Knackwurst from this website:

Don't use Franks or Bratwurst though, it's not the same.
This is one of my favorite dishes and my mom makes it for me every time I have the chance to go back to Germany.
Enjoy! :)

Currywurst
The currywurst is Berlin's gift to the world of fast food. Served at Schnell Imbiss (fast lunch) stands all over Berlin. Usually served on a wax paper covered paper plate, a currywurst is a bratwurst cut into sections, smothered with tomato sauce, and then sprinkled with curry powder and paprika. A currywurst is usually accompanied by a brötchen (roll) and goes well with bier.

Ken B--Me Too---You were there over 40 years ago, me much more recently and I have tried to buy it, tried to order it from "German" food mailorder places, and even had a professional chef go to great lengths to try to imitate it...AND IT IS NOT THE SAME...I can not figure out what the heck they do, but it sure is good..thank god I travel there frequently....( I am told german cooks have their own special family secret receipes and ingredients and that they are not all the same but I don't know if this is true).

Actually the recipes are pretty good, however its not Berlins invention, it was eaten already 45 years ago in the northern part of West Germany.

Very important to use a "real" Bratwurst, grilled, or pan-fried, don't even think about using a "cooked sausage" or a "cooked hot dog", that's just not it, yukk. Also, the paprika-powder is the much more important ingredient than the curry.
