Excel is a spreadsheet program, not a database.

Microsoft Access is a database program.

Databases allow you to express things in more than the 2 dimensions that excel allows you to.

You can't. Excel is too limited for that. But its excellent if you are just keeping lists which is a simplest form of database. I think 99% of excel users only need lists and not a database.
