I am applying to the NYFA (New York Film Academy) Producers course. I like the role a Producer has in motion picture. The course is one year but prior to enrolling I do not know if a Producer is independent/ or works for a movie studio such as MGM, Universal, Sony Pictures etc? I am familiar with Albert R Broccoli who created his own production company as did Jerry Bruckheimer and many others. Is this what all producers must do or after finishing the NYFA course ( by the way not a degree) will I be able to apply for the role at major film studios? I have scouted the major film studios site and the conglomerate of jobs are business and have nothing to do with the creative process such as directing, producing, screenwriting etc?

Please in summary can someone pathways one takes to produce films?

In short, I think that you just have to be open to all possibilities. You will probably have to start at the bottom, for example, working as a grip or assistant on a movie set or for a movie studio. I work for a former movie producer and she didn't start out trying for that job. She worked for 21st Century films as a marketing assistant and then she pitched an idea for a film and boom, she was producing her own picture. Now, she has her own company, thanks to the money she made working for 21st Century. Make lots of contacts, be willing to start at the bottom, and have faith! I want to become TV show producer and create my own TV show...but I started at the bottom. I work as a videoeditor for the CBS affiliate in my hometown, then I got a job producing the nightly news segment. This is my slow crawl up the ladder and hopefully someday I will be my own boss. Good luck!

Producing cannot be explained simply, the Producer is the manager of the Film, in a way. A Producer finds a script (or has one) and either begins finding funding/investors or attaches talent (Director, Actors) in order to help funding. Production Companies can have distribution deals with studios (Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount, etc.) and that can be where the money comes from as well.

If you've heard of Sundance, most of the films there are done independantly, then bought by studios for distribution. The Producers who produced these films did not have deals with Studios until they sell the film.

The best thing about graduating from the New York Film Academy's Producing program is that when you graduate, it's completely up to you whether or not you sink or swim. You have access to hundreds of Directors and Screenwriters (just from being in school), you have classes on how to finance a film, you have hands on experience producing numerous projects (from Music Videos, Documentaries, Shorts, and Pilots), and so much more.

If you want more information, let me know.
