Preferably the price a local fish store would sell for rather than a large pet shop would sell for.

Unfortunately I have only bought my fish at large pet shops and Meijer. Platy's usually run around 2 dollars a piece and my betta was about 3 or 4 dollars.

Bettas usually go for 3 to 6 dollars at local petstores, and platies more like 4-7$ depending on colour and finnage ; although a local fish store, you could probably talk them down to about 3$ if you said you knew how easily they reproduce.

I'd be surprised if you had to pay much above a pound for a platy. As the little buggers breed like rabbits you can probably pick up a load from a fellow fishkeeper for free - you'd be doing them a favour.
