Is there more of a market for young adult fiction or children's fiction?

I've written two novels, and I'm wondering which I should try to get published first. If the genre matters, the young adult novel is mainstream fiction, and the children's book is historical fiction.

My wife has six young adult books published. The market for young adult books is quite small - mainly girls aged between eleven and sixteen. What really helps is a connection to a TV series or movie. Roswell High?

The size of the book is also a factor as to whether your book is good YA material or general fiction. 45-55,000 words is about the maximum size of a YA book. If you have written a longer novel, it would be better in general fiction.

Chidrens books are hard sells - because the parents tend to buy the books that were read to them. There are few "new" children's books - I worked in a bookstore - schools and libraries tend to hand out the same reading lists every year. This doesn't make it impossible to sell but an agent would give you a better idea of what market fits your work.

Have you joined a writers' critique group? You will improve your writing if you have other people read your work.

Have you found an agent to represent you? See the link below.

Pick up a copy of Writer's Market at Borders or Barnes and Noble. It is a listing, sort of like the publishing world's yellow pages. You can find agents and publishers of both young adult and children's fiction.

Any market is going to be tough to break into, but like with everything in life, if it's worth having, it's worth being tenacious about. If you don't get into print your first time out, don't worry, a lot of people don't get picked up their first time out (I certainly didn't. It took a year and a half of submitting works to different agencies before I was picked up).

Also, you might want to have your work edited- don't pay a company to do it, see if you can find an English professor (if you know one) or someone else who knows what to look for, stylistically and mechanically/grammatically. But that could be getting ahead of myself.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
