People say when it snows you can tell by the colour of the clouds, but surely they will be grey?

Gray, they are the same color as storm clouds. If it's a snow storm, they are dark rolling gray. If it's just snowing, they could be white, gray (cloudy). You're bored!

they are a grey to blue colour. you can always tell not only by the clound´s you can smell it ,

They are very dense, low lying and pale grey/white. If you've seen them once they are instantly recognisable.
