As everyone else has said, both are great films, probably in the top 3 or 5 of all time, and both depict the realism of war, better than any other films I have ever seen. With that being said, I give the edge to Black Hawk Down, for a few reasons: 1) I read the book, and not only is the book just as good, if not better than the film, but the film is extremely accurate. 2) Blawk Hawk Down is based on the lives of real like people who fought and died in Somalia, and there is even a list of the people who died in the credits of the film, and I remember seeing the body of the pilots being drug around the streets of Mogadishu on CNN. 3) With all of the stars that keep popping up throughout the film(ie. Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti), it kind of distracts you away from the storyline. 4) I think Ridley Scott, and his brother Tony, is one of, if not the finest, director in the business today. If none of that is proof enough, who did they choose to play private Ryan? Matt Damon? Come one, that casting director should have been fired!!! Great question though!!! I have always wondered what people thought on that topic as well.

Technically speaking the events of Black Hawk Down was not during a war it was classified as a conflict. Saving Private Ryan took place during a war. Now with that being said. I would say both movies had their positives and negatives.
Saving Private Ryan was a more deeper story due to the characters being more developed. I enjoyed the movie but I will have to say I enjoyed Black Hawk Down more because of the emince action. Yeah, it had a story but it was plain to see that story was not the focus of this movie but to show the horror of urban warfare. To see how some of the characters meet their end was both shocking and saddening.
Black Hawk Down gets my vote.

Depends if you want historical accuracy or Hollywood glitz.
I`ve read the book of Black Hawk Down as well as seeing the film - I prefer that film to Saving Private Ryan since IT sticks closer to the documented account (and the actors are better LOL - Brits mostly).Whereas in Private Ryan you`re led to believe that America was alone in winning WW2.
