Boiler Type (Potterton Puma 100e)
Can anyone help im getting hot water as normal, but no heating, checked pressure and its showing 1.5bar as normal. When switched on to constant on the heating pilot fires and she lights for approx 10 seconds then stops, couple of mins late she fire's again for 10secs or so and thats all im getting. I cant hear the pump running. So my question is does the hot water out of the tap use the pump or is it a direct flow, and is the pump fused on the board somewhere. Im a tech service enginner so quite compitant with meter and tools, but what to check before i call in the corgi boys.

Cheers in advance

Hi. Try checking for 240v at the diverter valve. Because you have hot water you can discount 90%+ of the boilers' working parts. It has to be central heating related, hence the diverter valve will not open up to allow water to pass through to the radiator circuit. The flow pipe will be hot but the return pipe will be clod and the boiler will fire for an instant as if you have a circulation problem ie pump fault. If the pump is running ie impellers are not detached and are circulating then it will only circulate as far as the diverter valve and the boiler will heat up the non-circulated water rapidly and then shut down.

If you have power at the valve and it does not operate then it suggests that the valve requires changing. If you have no power then you need to work back to the PCB or where it gets its power from, look at the schematic if you have the book.

Enter the link below and this will give you a breakdown of your boiler and identify parts also. Official parts-arena for the potterton/baxi range!

If you are at all unsure, contact a local CORGI engineer, as parts are relatively expensive and apart from the PCB, if not used, can normally be refundable.

Good Luck.

combi boiler: the pressurised loop (the 1.5bar) is the heating loop. When heating hot water, the heating loop water is diverted through a heat exchanger via a three-port valve. So yes, the pump does run when the hot water is being heated, but the hot water comes under mains pressure and doesn't see the pump itself.

You have an airlock somewhere in the heating loop. As the water can't flow against an airlock, when the boiler fires the water inside the boiler heats up very quickly, reaches the right temperature, the boiler thinks it's done it's bit and shuts down again. That same water stays sitting inside the boiler, then cools off after a while and the burners have to fire up again, and the same thing happens.

Bleed all radiators (with the pump OFF) and if necessary get a plumber to sook out the airlock.

Are you sure it is the pump running and not the fan that you can hear? Onthe 100e the fan doesn't run all the time, only on demand. Switch of the juice and take the front off the boiler(2 screws at the bottom). Try venting the pump through the vent screw. It might be that the divertor valve is stuck in the hot water position so the boiler is firing with nowhere for the water to go

Hi - This boiler does not have a pilot light, it has electronic ignition. There should be a pressure gauge on the front of the boiler (it may be under a drop down cover). Pressure will be marked on the dial in 'Bar'. Where is the needle on the gauge pointing to? It should be 1-1.5 Bar. If the pressure is too low then the boiler wont fire. Below the boiler (probably) should be a 'silver' coloured flexible hose about 1/2" diameter. This is the filling loop to pressurise the system. There should be a small tap/metal square(about 1/4" across) attached to this hose. Turn it a 1/4 turn. You should hear water entering the system. Watch the needle on the gauge until it reaches 1Bar and then turn the tap/square off. Make sure it is off otherwise the pressure will continue to increase in the sysytem. If you are not happy doing this then call a heating engineer. If he's half-decent he will show you how to do it yourself in future if it's necessary.

Check the diverter valve it could be stuck, then check the micro switch located to the side of the diverter valve this could be faulty or just a loose wire
