This really depends on what kind of business you want to have. As an eBay employee I get asked that question a lot. First you have to research the website and see what kind of market already exists for your product. Check out the forums and talk to some of the powersellers that you may have purchased from for tips. Ultimately the answer is you can spend as much as you want on your business, but you have to be smart to reduce your overhead, promote your product and use eBay effectively. You should be able to open a store there for free for the first month or so and try it out. Just do your research and you'll be able to deteremine how much you need to start your business. Good luck!

Be serious... what kind of business, what is ordinary income to you, how cheap can you buy the products and how cheap can folks purchase the product elsewhere are questions you need answered beforehand... then ask the question.

I started my eBay business with just a £50 investment. It really depends on what you are intending to buy and sell.
