Disneyland is a lot of fun for adults, I like it a lot. But Disney World is also a ton of fun. Disneyland has a lot of options outside of the park, so you could do a day there as well. Disney is known more for being for kids, but a lot of adults go without kids, me included. I love the parks, Downtown Disney, etc. It is all great.
Universal does have more thrill rides than Disney, so if you like those rides, Universal may be better. If you want to stay onsite for convenience, Universal hotels are quite a bit more than Disney's resorts. But, they are more of a luxury accomodation, more like the deluxe resorts are Disney.
Both have a lot to offer. Depending on how long you want to go, you could always do both, most people don't spend much time at Universal, only a day or two.
If you are wanting to take your children in a few years, it may be a good idea to experience Disney on your own first. You can get an idea of what it is like, where to stay, etc. that way you will be a little more prepared when you go back.

I am biased, but I think that Disneyworld is the best value for the money. I went there on my honeymoon, and have been there since as an adult and a parent. The service is second to none, no matter which kind of resort you stay at.
If you are taking the kids, I would suggest the All-Star Movies resort. It is a little less expensive, and the whole resort is themed towards the kids. Each wing of the place is decorated towards a different Disney movie. The 101 Dalmations wing has fire hydrant stairs and 101 dalmation puppies on the buildings, not to mention the giant Pongo and Perdy statues that guard each entrance to the building. There is a Fantasia wing, Toy Story, etc. You get the picture.
If you two are going yourselves, I would suggest either the Caribbean Beach resort from the moderate resort choices or the Polynessian village from the Deluxe. The Caribbean beach is a little less crowded, and a little more quiet. The rooms are a little bigger, and instead of just a food court there is also a restaurant for dining. The Polynessian is by far my favorite. The rooms are great (and fairly large), the whole thing is done up like Hawaii. You can catch the monorail to the Magic Kingdom or Epcot center, and watch the fireworks every night over Cinderella's castle.
Hope you have a great time!!!!!!!

Definitely go to Walt Disney World! There's so much more to do! Walt Disney World contains four theme parks, two water parks, Downtown Disney, over 25 different resort hotel options, six golf courses (five are Championship courses), a large sports complex, an auto race track (the Richard Petty Driving Course), and numerous shoppins, dining, and entertainment options. Universal Studios is one theme park and the Islands of Adventure is one theme park, then there's three hotels, I believe and City Walk - their wanna-be version of Downtown Disney. Now, if you're only going for one day, I guess it doesn't matter. But if this is for a vacation you should definitely go to Walt Disney World. You can complete both of the Universal theme parks in less than an entire day. One would be lucky to complete all four Walt Disney World theme parks in an entire week.
Hope I could help! Have fun, whatever you choose!

If your taking a 3 and 4 year old I would say magic kingdom is best for that age...epcot is a good way to introduce younger children to rides also...when we went the first time my youngest was 4 and we did epcot first they have alot of tame rideswe followed that up with magic kingdom then islands of adventure (universal) then the regular universal follwed by mgm and animal kingdom was last..I might say animal kingdom would be good for younger kids but not much fun for grownups...Islands of adventure at universal has a little section dedicated to kids dr suess landing...but the other rides were a little much for my youngest...they have a tour book called the unoficial guide to disney world you can pick up inexpensivley at any disney store this helped us tremendously as it has all the height restrictions for rides and which rides are best for which age of children and it covers all the disney parks i would pick this up and go through the rides and decide from there..hope this helps

I prefer Disney myself and I am an adult. Granted, I have a slight bias, but I have been to all of the theme parks - Universal, WDW, and Disneyland in California the most. The great thing about Disney is that they have something for everyone. Check out Disney's website at:
http://www.disney.com
and click on travel. Check out both Disneyland and the Disney World Resort and click on "something for everyone." You can browse through specific entertainment and attractions which are geared for big kids. :)
Universal Studios is a tad boring. I prefer Islands of Adventure in Orlando over their regular park. It is a lot of fun and they have fantastic roller coasters.
Cost also might be a factor for you guys. Are you closer to California or Florida? Check flight prices at http://www.bookingbuddy.com and let flight costs decide which coast you visit. If you visit Orlando, you can spend a few days at Disney and spend 1 day at Islands. And if you visit Southern California, you can visit both Disneyland and California Adventure. I also recommend visiting a non-Disney park, located in Buena Park, CA (just minutes from Disneyland) called Knott's Berry Farm. It is wonderful and you guys will just love it.
Both Disney World and Disneyland are offering great promotions right now! Here are some details on both promotions:
