Mel Kiper is reporting that the Patriots and Raiders have a deal on the table where the Pats would trade Reche Caldwell and Richard Seymour to the Raiders for Jerry Porter and the Number 1 pick in this year's draft.. Apparently Belichick is enamored with Brady Quinn and wants to draft him as Tom Brady's successor... Is this a good trade for the Raiders???

Its a horrible trade for the Raiders. Reche Caldwell wont help the Raiders much and their defense is not what needs the makeover. The Pats could live with out Seymour because they always seem to bounce back when they ship their best players out. They could certainly use Porter and the number one overall pick wont hurt them. But the Raiders still have to many problems to trade it away. A better trade for oakland would be to trade Moss for Caldwell and the Pats number 1 pick. That could work out for each team.

Never mind the Raiders - why would the Patriots even consider such madness?

Richard Seymour is a defensive franchise player, and Brady is anything but "slipping badly" (as another answerer claimed). Brady is going into his 7th year, and still firing on all cylinders. If the Pats hadn't run up against a Colts squad that just refused to die, Brady would be collecting his 4th ring right now.

Never mind the fact that Quinn is totally (and I mean totally) unproven.

This rumor is just daft. The only thing about it that makes even an ounce of sense is that Caldwell is as historical as the French and Indian War - he's dropped his last clutch pass from Brady. Maybe they'll have a trade with Oakland for some used jock supporters for Caldwell - but that's about as far as it'll go.

I highly doubt that. Brady has a lot of years left as the Patriots QB, barring injury. It would make no sense to trade away a stub defensive lineman like Seymour to get an unproven entity like Quinn.

Belichick is the Billy Beane of the NFL, always looking for value.

The Patriots need a lot help, but QB isn't the position. They need linebackers that can keep up with Dallas Clark, they need DBs and they do need wide receivers. There was a rumor during the season that the Patriots were interested in Jerry Porter, but it never happened.

Also, Quinn is rumored to be falling in the draft. Don't the Raiders need a QB?

It would be Al Davis getting raped in a trade again, by Robert Craft. Besides, Tom Brady has still got 5 to 8 very productive years left. I think Brady Quinn goes to Miami. The Raiders will draft Jamarcus Russell and totally waste his awesome talent.

Um, Brady Quinn when you got a QB, and Matt Cassel is not chopped liver.
Seymour and Caldwell to the Raiders?

Um, assuming that Kiper said that shows Kiper has bad info.:)

Wow, Bellichick is a genius! He sees what all the "experts" are afraid to: No, it's not that the Patriots pick up losers at bus stops to play Wide Receiver, the real problem is that Tom Brady, at 28, is far past his prime and slipping badly. Unload Tom Brady now, while he still has a shred of value, and install Quinn for the 2007 season.
I know, doubters will say Tom Brady has 3 rings and is the most clutch player since joe montana while Quinn has choked in every big game he's suited up for, but those people don't have the foresight of a Bellichek, They're just seeing the forest for the trees!

Great. Murdock's at it again.

It would be a bad trade for both teams. The Raiders would get a great D-lineman but they need O-line and a QB. Plus, Brady will play for at least six more years. There's no need for New England to change quarterbacks. They would gain a pretty good receiver but lose a valuable piece to the defense.

Tom Brady has like 10 years left...and the main reason the Patriots have 3 Super Bowl titles...Manning is older than Brady by about a year and he just won his FIRST Super Bowl...Brady is NOT past his prime, to the nutcases who posted that he is...The Patriots are not looking to replace him...I think they better draft/seek free agents at receivers, linebackers and cornerbacks though...They might want another good running back too...Dillon will retire soon, and Maroney is going to be the man...but they will need a backup RB

There are a bunch of rumors flying around about the Raiders trading players...doubt it will add up to much. Pats will be looking for a WR though ...thinking maybe Sidney Rice out of SC

The Patriots will take TomKat's baby as the number 1 pick by the time they have fallen that low...

And to Gonzo, these rumors are all from Murdock.
