When a person has been hurt in a relationship and is convinced that the other person doesn't care anymore, a lasting way to hurt that person and get revenge is to take or destroy their posessions

I don't know why anyone would want underwear, but a lot of other things usually get talked about. What happens with the stuff you shared will depend on 1) the length of the divorce process, 2) the length of the relationship, 3) the actual monetary needs of either party, and 4) the influence of lawyers, friends, relatives, etc. Sometimes we want to hang onto the physical objects because they mean much more to us than the actual cost. Sometimes we feel like we can live without any of it if only we can get away from the relationship. Sometimes we feel sorry for someone and give them everything. Sometimes we feel like we should have everything because someone is leaving us. When I broke off a long relationship, I felt different ways at different times. At some point, decisions have to be made and if you haven't worked through any of your feelings, you will probably do something that looks pretty stupid later on. The person who takes everything is probably feeling incredibly abandoned or betrayed, and is acting out the anger.

When you marry you promise yourself to the other for life. When you divorce you break that promise. People will say and do all sorts of things out of hurt and anger over that broken promise. Keeping the possessions just means they don't want to lose the person - but they have no way of keeping that person so they keep everything else instead.
I know it's frustrating - but think about how distressed your ex must be to be exhibiting this kind of irrational behavior.

When my divorce started , I was hurt that he was cheating on me again, and with my youngest sister. But when he filled the papers and said what he wanted and if I did not do certain things I was going to have to pay him support. (He had not worked in the last 17 years and 33% of our married life. ) I final stood up and said I will get everything the court will allow. In fact I got more, because I proofed he was a cheat , a liar and a thief. You reap what you sow in life. I let him have his underwear. Think about what you have done to someone and put yourself in there shoes and you will see this is the only way they have to fight back. Ugly and nasty but true.

Out of spite!!!! Its funny that people going through a divorce, can really turn out to be animals. At one time they were in love and got married, and when it all goes down the toilet, their fangs and claws come out. Not saying its happens in every case, but in most. Its just a mixture of emotions, like betrayed, angry, hurt, still in love, denile, cheated on, and these are juyst a few.

Some people are idiots.I got divorced and my ex was supposed to get half of everything but he did not take anything but that was because there wasn't anything good enough for him to take. Everything that we had was good enough for me but not for him.He thought that he was better than me and I am glad that he is now gone.
