wat exactly is an emo?

the only reason i ask is cuz i work at a skool and some of the kids say im one. ok i wear a lot of black cuz lets face it its sliming and while winters here u never feel like wearing colours, well i dont anyway. i do love listening to kasabian, killers, snow patrol, arctic monkeys and various other rock/indie stuff but im always smiling and i thought a n emo is some1 who is depressed a lot can any1 help????

im not a pupil at a skool i work at 1 im a teaching assistant

i think i may have worded my question wrong im not being bullied im a 30 year old woman who works in a primary skool i just wondered wat 1 was as the older kids in the skool who r about 11 keep tellng me im 1 im not bothered by it tho at all

emo is shortened for emotioal but in the termnology its just someone who listsns to emotional rock and stuff its a myth that all emos self harm and cry alot teach thease kids a real lesson in life that image isnt the bee all and everyone can enjoy diffrent types of sounds

An emo is merely a style of music and fashion. However a few people a long time ago got into cutting and were involved in the emo fashion. It didn't take long for a reputation to spread and now due to some idiots who didn't really understand what an emo was they have been given the reputation of being cutters. Which is stupid becuase anybody can cut. Not smart though. But generally people are defined as emo by outragous hairstyles, emo clothing, and music. But just cause some one wears black doesn't mean their emo. They could be Gothic too. And no an emo is not always depressed. Emos for the most part are very fun to hang out with.

nah emo is black & red t-shirts & hoodies, and too tight black skinny jeans, black chuck taylor converse, ties, black eyeliner & palish makeup (even on guys), fringes over your eyes, and listening to Panic! At The Disco and Hawthorne Heights. ohh and think self-harm, depression, crying all the time, suiciadal thoughts and being a total loner. don't go there. however, some of the music, like My Chem for example, is really good. people call me emo because I listen to them, and althought it drives me nuts I've learned to ignore them. wear brighter colours if it gets to you a lot, it's the only solution I can think of.

but don't listen to them, you sound cool. great taste in music by the way. I've seen arctic monkeys live and I'm gonna see the killers on the 28th!

An Emo is a guy or girl who sings Emotional Rock Songs that have meaning and depth, and all those who are against it as insensitive pricks. I dont understand why people have to discriminate just because of a music style.

I thought an emo (emotional) was a modern day verion of an 80's goth.
Nothing seems to be different from when i was a goth - same attitude, same stripey tghts, lots of black clothes, chunky black shoes, scruffy back-combed hair, lots of black make-up. And of course the obligatory miserable music that makes your parents rant about "in my day there was proper music"!!
I still love the music but have toned down the hair, clothes and make-up!!

its an image, dont worry i was called hippy at school but that was because of my way of thinking, I was into hiphop and r n b at the time!!!!
emo is just another way of labeling, just like punk, neopunks, indie kids etc, we tend to like to put people into groups! what matters is you know what and who you are!
emo is a new image its like a mixture of indie and punk, lads that where eyeliner and straighten their hair, kind of goth meets indie/punk/80´s its a fusion that encompasses 80´s fashions.
you´ll find its because the majority of people brought up in the 80´s are now in influencial positions in fashion /music t.v etc
and want to relive their childhood!

if it bothers you just say why do you insist on putting labels on people we are all different (turns out my school mates where right I am a bit of hippy)
