Hi the vet i used to work at was a little weird when i started working there. The doctor never put surgical gloves on when doing a castration or anything else and he would always leave every animal on the floor in the surgery room. Also he never told me or any other person helping him with an open animal to put any kind of surgical gloves or protection on us. Im trying to persuit my carreer to becoming a vet and i dont want them to be run like this. is this normal or should i call osha?

There is little OSHA can do from the scenario you painted, and OSHA generally does not take complaints from ex-employees as a high priority. If there are less than 10 full time employees OSHA regs don't apply to his practice. And remember, OSHA is concerned with worker safety, not animal welfare. Unless the animal blood exposed you to blood borne pathogens or you were exposed to contaminated sharps that contain BBP the OSHA regs may not even apply.

The appropriate steps would be to report him to the veterinary licensing board or ASPCA/Humane Society. In many states the Department of Consumer Affairs regulates medical licensing.

I would report him to your State's Veterinary Licensing Board, OSHA, and anyone else you could think of that has anything to do with him. Not only is this considered inhumane and dangerous treatment of animals, most people try to trust the Vet that they take their animals to. I would not have a problem reporting him. And you would probably feel better knowing you did something to protect the animals and their families.

You are right, it is not normal. DON"T call OHSA, unless the doctor, facility, or co-workers stop you from defending yourself with safety measures.
