3 sides, L, W, W

L+W+W = 680

L= 2W

2W+W+W = 680
4W = 680
W = 680/4

W = 170
L = 170*2 = 340

Let a be the width. Then the length is 2a

For two widths and one length.

2*a + 2a =680. So 4a = 680, therfore a = 170. The pasture has a width of 170, and a length of 340.

For two lengths and one width,

a + 2*2a = 680. So 5a = 680, therefore a = 136. The width is 136, and the length is 272.

Depends what side the river runs on...

680 ÷ 2 = 340 = Length

340 ÷ 2 = 170 ft (width, each end)

= 3 sides of the pasture 340ft by 170ft

So, the fence has three sides.
The pasture is twice as long as it is wide.
So, width is X, Length is 2X.
Fence length is X + 2X + X = 4X
680/4X = 170 feet
the pasture is 170 x 340

I get L&W are 340' and 170' when the river is along a length, and L&W are 272' and 136' when the river is along a width. Sorry - the question is ambiguous!!

Length = 2x
Width = x

2x + 2x + x + x = 6x (because pasture has 4 sides, cannot take a side away, thats impossible)

5x, if width on river side
4x, if length on river side

IF WIDTH ON RIVER SIDE:

5x = 680
x = 136
length (of one side) = 272 feet
width (of one side) = 136 feet

IF LENGHT ON RIVER SIDE:

4x = 680
x = 145
length (of one side) = 290 feet
width (of one side) = 145 feet

the width of the two sides is 170 the length of the long side is 340.

Let width be x

So, x+x+2x = 680

or 4x = 680

or x = 170 feet

Yo didn't specify if the river runs allong the lenght or width whivh is a problem, im assuming length

680=2W+L
2W=L
thus
680=L+L=2L
L=340
W=170
