what do i need to do to get into the gear shifter assembly?

Drain the oil.
Remove the right side crankcase cover.
Remove the clutch assembly.
If the bike isn't shifting, or slips out of gear, the entire engine will have to be disassembled to repair the transmission.

are you asking how to open the transmision case?because the shift lever should be conected to the shift cam witch puts it in gear if you are not mechanicaly inclined you should not try opening it .
