I know that a .com extension usually indicates a "commercial" site, and .org would probably indicate an organization - something other than commercial. But what does ".us" indicate?

.us is simply another top level domain. One can register a domain using pretty much any TLD regardless of which country they live in, provided that the desired domain name is available.

I believe it indicates that the website is either hosted in the United States or that the company/entity represented by the website exists in the United States.

When the internet was originally set up, each country was assigned a two letter code that could be used for web sites hosted within that country. ".us" belongs to the United States.

So a web site that ends with the .us is "suppose" to be host within the United States. But as no one enforces that rule, who knows....

Something associated with some form of government. You sometimes see things like school districts done with the state abbreviation then dot us. Like XYZschoolK12.ca.us.

It is the suffix for the United States. Since we invented the internet it is not used but assumed. It does not mean government. The suffix gov means government.

It is just the united states country code like ca for canada, mx for mexico uk for united kingdom, etc.
