They're short-sighted.

For example, knucklehead wants to put a tax on gasoline refiners instead of consumers. In his small head, this will cost refiners but save consumers. In reality, gasoline will just be more expensive for consumers. Knucklehead doesn't realize this, or he does but is only trying to convince a greater knucklehead (the public) that he is acting in their best interest (to win votes).

No party, be it Republican or Democrat, wants to raise taxes. It is a very unpopular issue.
For years the rich have not paid their fair share of taxes; the Democrats now in both Houses want to change the rules a bit so that those that have pay a bit more. The rest of us realize that this must be done in light of the huge debt that has been run up & the money we have borrowed from other nations. How do you like knowing that we owe China a lot of money & cannot repay it! You can believe that the rich will still have plenty of loop holes that they will use to write off much of what you & I will end up paying. Our government has all it can do to just pay on the interest of the hopeless amount of money that has put us in debt. We cannot continue to run up debt that cannot be paid, all we can do is try to repay some of the money we owe; the only way is to raise taxes. Like it or not.

I hear this often and there is no support to your question. First of all both parties affect your taxes whether you realize or not. The government has been doing that since the beginning when we defeated the British. So people are better at hiding the way the taxes are raised. Don't be fooled with the tax breaks, No one gets nothing for nothing. We are tax on everything! Do be naive. All parties has issues!

Many belive that social programs dont help, and that they, as Americans should not be taxed for these types of programs. But many forget that help for the eldery for perscription drug buys, or education, or bankrupt because of spending any money they had to help their wives or husbands overcome cancer and still dies leaving absoulity no money, I could go on but that is why in some cases taxes must be raised. The ones that balk at this may find themselves in the same situation one day and will need help and hopefully it will be there for you. These are the basic social programs that need to be in effect we will all have it rough one day non of us will go unscathed, every one needs a hand. You may think not me iI save for these events well my friend you may not have enough.
N tax raises is not realistic certainly now with escalation of the war any person with common sence will say that it must be raised to pay for this thing. Or is our reserve, what is left of it , be raided. No my friend in the days when Big business has been given corperate tax breaks and hugh sweetheart deals abound helping only the wealthy then it does not make good sence not to raise taxes.
It is time for Dems and Republicans no matter what your stance is on this war to see that padding the way for the rich is cutting us out and making us pay for there cake.
We all need to see that all people basicaly have the same goals dems and rep. we want to live, we want to have a fair paying job, we want to own a house and we want to give our children the best education there is .
I think we need to come together on this and stop listening to people that have agendas that have nothing to do with ours the common guy.

Because they need extra money to pay for all those earmarks and special projects they want to add to the budget. It is how they can guarantee re-election in 2 or 6 years. Get enough federally funded projects into their district, and they will win repeated elections. Of course the Republicans are just as bad with the special projects. They also want to be re-elected. Why do you think that 75% of those eligible to vote don't bother.

The Democrat party is rapidly shifting towards a complete socialist agenda. It embraces marxist philosophy, in which higher tax rates, especially upon wealthier, successful individuals, is a major platform. Marxism/socialism has proven over the years to be a failure, a panacea that stands out on paper but fades in actual practice. The Democrats, unfortunately, have not learned from history.

For the same reason the U.S. debt/relative to GDP seems to go up during Republican presidencies.

The Democrats are evil, but they have to clean up the hot fiscal mess that Republicans create.

Democrats wanted more funds for their projects. Thus, they wanted to raise taxes to spend for their target projects.

Your question is deceptive. A 1% increase in sales tax is part of a overall plan that includes a cut in property taxes. Why didn't you ask why Democrats always want to cut property taxes?
