The traditional school year evolved when we were largely an agrarian economy and the children were needed in the fields for a long period over the summer for harvesting and such. That certainly isn't the case any longer. Now, especially in light of what we have learned about information retention periods, etc, year round schools seem to work best for many children. There isn't as much "wasted" time at the beginning of each school year to refresh memories that have "wilted" over the long summer months. The breaks every 9 weeks or so seem to benefit the students as well. Finally, the economic advantages for the school systems, many of which are overcrowded these days, are undeniable.

As a teacher, I feel that year round school is more beneficial to the students. Studies have shown that students retain learned material better when they go to class year round. It also has an effect on how the school operates. When I begin classes in August, I usually spend the first 2-3 weeks reviewing info. that the students should have learned last year. Rarely do they remember. Now, the arguement with parents is that it messes up summer vacation times or that the kids need a break. Most year round schools are in session for 9-12 weeks at a time with a 2 week break in between. Summer break usually last 4-6 weeks, so there is plenty of time for vacations with the family. Another thought is that the US has fallen behind other countries in areas of science and technology, manufacturing, and other industries because we don't value education as much as we used to. Hope that helps.

No, learning also takes place outside of school. There are things that schools cannot teach. Every summer, I went to summer camp. I continued to do so until I became the waterfront director and a key member of staff. That experience best prepared me for my day to day personal and professional life. I learned very important values about teamwork, tolerance, hard work, independence, and alternatives to my cultural practices. At the end of each summer, I returned to school excited and encouraged. We don't need year-round school, extended school year perhaps. We just need to find more constructive alternatives for our youth during the summer.

I loved having a year round schedule. When my family and I wanted to go on vacation, I was off school at times when other kids weren't so vacation spots weren't so crowded and expensive. And it gave me breaks intermittantly throughout the year so I never really got burnt out.
