Probably because the tank is too small.
Goldfish need more room than you'd think; 5 fancy goldfish would need a minimum of a 75 gallon tank.
5 common goldfish, or comets or koi, need to live in ponds. They are not aquarium fish.

Dougie,
the problem is, just as with anything else, Poo Poo happens. There are so many factors as to why your fish died it is impossiable with the information you gave to say. It could have been old, stressed, sick. It may not have been able to handle your tanks water conditions.
How big is your tank? I am assuming since you have 5 gold fish it is around 50 gallon? Gold fish are pond fish not bowl fish and require 1 sq. foot of surface water for every inch of fish. A 50 gallon should do. If you have them in a very small 10 gallon, that is difficult to say. Some fish do not transfer well.
Give us more info and we will try to help....in the interium, the other 4 are fine. Keep them going and we will be here to help

For 5 goldfish, you need at the very least, right now, a 50 gallon tank, well, now that one has died, a minimum of a 40 gallon tank, and plan on upgrading to at least an 80 gallon tank once they start getting bigger than 4 inches. You are going to have more than one goldfish die if you don't make arrangements to get a bigger tank ASAP. You have 4 goldfish at this point. If you can't afford one big tank, break the goldies up into two pairs and get two 20 gallon plastic storage containers. Set them up just like you would a regular aquarium with a filter and gravel and plants. Cycle the water first and the water quality up to the requirements to keep goldfish healthy and happy. Read up on how to keep goldies to avoid more dying. Good luck to you and your little fishies!

it might be because you have to many in the water so on of them died because you did not have a big tank to fit them all in or it could be because that fish did not get fed much.
Good Luck with your other fish all the best!!!

my first guess is the tank is too small. 5 goldfish should be in 50 gallons with partial water changes weekly. anything smaller and the water changes should skyrocket. their poop produces toxins that will kill each other. usually the fittest will survive and the rest will die out if they aren't given regualar clean water.

How big is your tank?
-10 gallons per goldfish as they create a lot of ammonia.
How long has it been running?
-It should have cycled before you put fish in it.
Did you put water conditioner in your tank?
-The water conditioner takes out the harsh metals and chlorine out of the water. With out this your fish will die.

well...first of all it depends on what size tank you have and how old the fish was.....it also depends on how much food it got....a good thing to make sure is that each fish gets food...

If your other goldfish are healthy, then it might have been old age, or you might have purchased a sick one.
Just double check your ph, ammonia and temperature of your tank
