It could be an olfactory hallucination caused by fixating on a particular smelly object or more likely it represents a draft coming in from another area where that object actually is.

Could be a craving you have for a food is making you think you are smelling something... or something that is actually coming through a wall or air vent is stinking up a room- or high tide in the pipes of your building causes a stench; a dead rat in the wall is a possibility perhaps a fart? Burp? Mold or mildew smells funky... BO on a chair?Ascented candle?It even could be a ghost.What do you think you are smelling?Is it a good or bad smell?

It means that it's a smell coming from a different dimension. A lot of times people smell cologne a person now deceased wore, or as for myself, cigar scent from my father.

I suppose science would be totally ignored, but the real meaning is that there were molecules present that were from the item you smelled. It may have been there at one time or the molecules may have drifted in from somewhere else.

depending on what you smell - I remember there is one odor associated with a serious medical condition (Brain tumor?) but I cant remember which condition or odor - get it checked
