Because many Black people can be selfish and feel the need to be direct about their feelings towards white people, forgetting that slavery was over for years, and we have our freedom, plus they weren't even there to experience the torture. Blacks weren't the only people who fought for our freedom, white people did too. So did Abraham Lincoln. Many black people don't look at Black History as something to learn from and appreciate, they use to to throw it in other's faces. Like comics, actors, people who just want to make a statement that usually ends up in ignorance.

I think that what a lot of people fail to realize is that when we celebrate Columbus and Presidents we aren't celebrating the whiteness about them, we are celebrating the history of the United States of America. The people who founded the country were white. The person who discovered that this continent was here was (of course not realizing that he was even going to discover this continent) was European, Italian really. But why is it thought that we celebrate white history when in fact we are celebrating American history? What if the explorers were from Africa? Would it have made a difference then? What would it be felt about White history month then?
Too many people are making excuses, PC has become what it was trying to fight.
I believe in TRUE EQUALITY, where everyone has the same chance, not based on skin color, gender or religion. You can't have an equal society if everyone is pushing for segregation from each other. Especially when that segregation is based on looks.

Look at how much history is actually taught about black in school in a world history class in general. A lot of what has come out of African and from Africans and African Americans is never told or really spoken of in USA or World history. But I think if you are going to be politcally correct there should also be more done for Native American History month in November ,Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month is in May and hispanic History Month which goes from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 which we have but aren't talked about as much as African American History month. You have to really learn why black history week was started by Carter G. Woodson to realized why we need it still today. If we lived in a perfect world then we wouldn't need to have either one of those months but since we don't then it should give black a chance to celebrate what we have contributed to this country and the world. To me we as black should be more vocal in helping Native Americans, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month and Hispanic Americans celebrate thier months as I think they should do for us also. In helping each other then it helps all of our cases in bring a more open minded view on what shaped this country to be what it is and who we are as american. For with out understanding there can really be no progress. MLK if he was still alive I think would be disappointed in how we as blacks have not lived up to what he and others fought so hard for.

I happen to know that other races such as Hispanic, Asian, and even some subsidiaries of European people have a month to themselves however it's just not that well advertised. Also does anyone feel it strange that Black History Month is celebrated on the shortest month of the year?

Others do! If you would educate yourself you would know this. Asian History Month has been around for almost 20 years. Don't blacks or anyone else because you don't know this.
I'm dumbfounded that you don't know this yet. If you would just read every message written on Black History Month, on this site, you would already have your answer.

As far as I know, black people aren't preventing any other people from celebrating their history during a specific month. Other groups can celebrate their history whenever they want to. What's not fair is people making it seem as if black people have a monopoly on honoring history. Also, black people need this opportunity to remember. Other groups of people (namely, white people) have much more time given over to the celebration of their own cultural heritage. Columbus Day? What color was Christopher Columbus? Presidents Day? What color has every single president of the United States been? Even a general history class will give you a clear view of white culture, and a very sparse sprinkling of facts about African-Americans. If young people do not have strong shoulders to stand on, then how are they to survive?

I don't really give a damn about black history MONTH but I sure hope you aren't suggesting that America is egalitarian when it comes to race issues. MLK was talking equality- and was killed. What's the message there?

I study black history year-around.
Lena-F obviously you need a little black history month.
Cause MLK was most certainly NOT muslim. I think you have him confused with someone else.

I agree with you completely! I don't think it's fair that Aisans, native americans, etc, don't have months while black people do. We focus on black history month in school and all, but ignore other cultures.....
