I am puchasing a new miter saw, and was curious as to which is a better buy. The Rigid has a much better warranty but does that mean it is more likely to break? The price is close although the DeWalt is a little more expensive. Which do I buy and why?

Dont really have a preference they both make great tools....as for rigid being a store brand? Thats false rigid has been around for many years, I have pipe wrenches and pipe threaders that Ive owned for more than 30 yrs, great tools, great warrant. They have traditionally been the market of supplying tools to the trades. (similar to Snap-on tools), They have only recently started selling those tools at retail outlets. Since both make fine tools your decision should be based on how confortable the tool is for YOU to use.

Home Depot Dewalt Miter Saw

They are both good. If you plan on a lot of cutting, choose the DeWalt. If not, the Rigid is very good. Also to save you money, the Hitachi is a VERY good miter saw and is cheaper than the two above. You can get it on e bay or even LOWES at a very reasonable price. I've had the DeWalt, Delta, Craftsman, etc...and I like the Hitachi better. I am a contractor and use the miter saws a lot.

Rigid is OWNED by and sold exclusively by Home Depot. Dewalt is now Black and Decker's premium line and the regular B&D stuff is on sale everywhere for next to nothing (and is as useful as that).
I would buy the Rigid if you use it for a living. If it's for the home hobbyist or DIY'er, there are some less expensive tool lines out there that will outlive you and not cost the same as a small imported car.

rigid,
the new dewalt compund miter saws dont slide far enough torwards you, so if you mark a board ya might as well pull out a speed square and mark it, you can't pull the saw out far enough to see if you are lined up for your cut (unless you mark the very top edge). plus if you have a problem with your rigid home depot will take it back no questions asked...
i owned a new dewalt compund miter saw for one day and i took it back. i don't personally own a rigid, i prefer hitachi ,but an employee of mine has one and it seems to work nice.

dewalt is now owned by black and decker and is not as good as they used to be. b & d has cheapened the air compressors and other tools that i have used. just look at all of the cordless drills and batteries behind the customer service desk at lowes or h.d. and you'll see what i mean. if the saw is for your own home use, go with the rigid. if you will be using it to make your living and need to depend on it, shop some more and look at the hitachi, and milwaukee saws. they are the ones that i use and worth every penny. good luck, hope this helps

Dewalt has been around a long time unlike Rigid. Therefore dewalt has worked out the flaws. I've never had to use a dewalt warranty.

Smile.. I have probably every brand of power tool produced and it's as much a matter of HOW you need to use it as it is HYPE in brand names.

The theory that a longer term warranty means the item is of a lesser standard is silly. No Company wants your broken tool returned because it failed through their own BARGAIN production thoughts and processes, BUT, even Lamborghinis need a TUNE UP on occasion.

Define the use it will get, versus initial costs. DE WALT is someone else anyhow, just as RIGID is. (Admittedly I like Yellow and Black, versus Gray and Red, SMILES)

What would you rather experience, a tool that does the JOB, only once, but cost less? OR a tool that is used only ONCE, but cost more?

Steven Wolf

Beyond all that it's pretty much a testosterone thing for my gender, and preferences most often driven by HYPE before experience.
