The best team in the NBA over the past five seasons is without a doubt the San Antonio Spurs, and here is why:
- They have great coaching... and great play is never enough, they are always looking at ways to improve defensively or offensively. The can outscore you, or they can buckle down and beat you in a defensive battle.
- They have one of the most dominant players of my era, in Tim Duncan, he is still an incredible force, and opens up opportunities for his teammates anytime he is on the court.
- They are the New England Patriots of the NBA. They don't go out and spend millions of dollars on the big name free-agents, they wisely scout talent, and only bring in the players that have the determination to win and succeed as a team.
- 2003 and 2005 NBA Champions.
- Over the past five regular seasons, they have a combined 297-113 record.

Over the last 5 years it would be the Spurs. I can't stand them, but they are the best team of the last 5 years. They play in the West which is by far the tougher conference. The 4th or 5th seed in the West is as good or better than the #1 seed in the East almost any year.
(yes I know the Heat won last year, but let's just say when you are "allowed" to shoot that many more free-throws than your opponent, you SHOULD win every time.)

Ok I hear all this about the spurs, pistons, and suns... But... I believe the best team has been the mavs... They have been so close every year but they can't get over that "hump" They have been close every year... They can constantly beat the suns or spurs but when it comes to that close game they just can't beat them... It's like the jazz in past years... They were always one of the best if not the best but they could never get that championship... Thanks to chicago... Even on Chicago's "off" years they still beat the jazz... So yeah I pick the mavs as the best in the last five years...

Spurs because I believe they have won two titles within the last five years and always go deep in the playoffs.

it has to be the spurs, who have won the title twice the past 5 years and have been by far the most consistent. their team is a major contender for the championship every year, which is a testament to great management... plus, having the most consistent player of the past decade in tim duncan doesnt hurt either.
