Hey Spider C,

All you have to do is look for a topic that you find interesting. Then, it is pretty much giving your personal point of view. Yes, this means that it will be subjunctive at times.

Essays are usually short and non-fictional. The usual format includes:
-an introduction presenting the thesis statement
-three body paragraphs, with ideas to support the thesis.
- a conclusion, which restates the thesis and summarizes the supporting points.

Don't panic and give it a try, after all the word essay comes from the French essayer ('to try' or 'to attempt').

Hope this helps!

I've only come across two writers of exemplary essays and they were both Spanish and called Miguel: Miguel de Cervantes and Miguel de Unamuno. The latter was powerfully influenced by the former. Both take examples from life and from them draw conclusions which are suppose to uplift the reader and help him come to terms with aspects of life. In other words, they are shining examples of how to live, stories with morals. If I were faced with this task (and I'm glad I'm not) I might draw from real life as I know it and lessons I've learned or I might update and flesh out a parable or one of Aesop's fables.
