I let time do some of the work for me. When I first moved in, it looked like the stove hadn't been cleaned for YEARS!!! First, get the grease off... I used dawn direct foam directly on the greasy parts and let it sit for a little while, then wiped off the greasy mess. Then, use bar keeper's friend, its a powder that comes in a gold colored canister, you will find it in the cleaning supply aisle at most stores, I pick it up at family dollar.

I don't know what your stove top is made of.
409 seems to dissolve a lot of products well, but can damage some surfaces if they have coatings on them. Spray the 409 on it and let it sit. It is easier to wipe the grease up first.
Bar Keeper's friend is a wonderful product as well. I put it on a damp surface and it helps to remove stains if it sits overnight.

I clean my stove with Dawn first. After it is rinsed I go over it with white vinegar-it works on water stains and helps it shine.

try ajax, or a stover cleaner, just make sure u use brillo pads, if the stains are really tough then use steel wool, but becareful with the steel wool it will scratch the surface of the stove if you scrub too hard, but it will get the stains off, be sure to use extremely hot water

I like the clorox powdered bleach. I guess it depends on the color of the stove for that though.
