Very rarely do I need a new heel for my shoe at the same time as getting a new girlfriend and needing a new key cut? What is the history between the cobbler and the key?

Its evolution mate!
They were forced to expand due to the lack of footware repair.
They also do engraving and other things that aren't associated with true cobblers of "Olde".
