I'm with Mrs. T. - give the cat a break. I mean, they DID go 13-3 with him starting. And yes, I know that the defense carried a bunch of those games - but I'd note that this same Bears team has not been nearly as successful under "better" QB's.
And sure, Rex has had the most games with the lowest QB rating of any NFL QB this year. But curiously, he's also had the most plus-100 QB rating games of any NFL QB this year. Yes - he had 20 interceptions - but he also had 23 TD's. A lot of "name" QB's didn't have half as good stats in their first full years. That should not be discounted.
I'm not discounting his mistakes, or his inconsistency - and not at all defending his atrocious 2nd half in the Super Bowl. What I *am* saying is that this was a young QB's first full year in the NFL. No - I don't call Rex a "rookie", as despite the injuries, he has been in the league for two years before this one. But, by the same token, merely sitting on the sidelines for two years does not equate to experience in game situations.
Personally, I can't be sure he'll develop - when he's bad, he's horrible, and he has a real flair for incredibly stupid decisions. But he's young, clearly has talent inside him, and the Bears seem to rally around him like no other QB in many, many years. I think that all indicates a lead worth following up on.

I think Grossman will be back next seasons as the starter for atleast the first game. Grossman has a lot of potential so I think Smith will give him a fair chance to prove that he can be consistant. However, Smith knows that his defense deserves better than to play their hearts every game and not know what QB will show up. So if we start seeing signs of the Rex that played against Arizona or the one from the superbowl, I wouldnt be surprised if he was benched.

You want to know how Bears fans from Chicago feel about Rex?
I never want to see that guy in a Bears uniform again for the rest of my life. The guy is garbage plain and simple.
Let's look at the arguments delusional Rex apologists trot out.
1) It's his first year starting. He deserves a break.
Rex Grossman may be inexperienced but after a certain point it has become an excuse. The guy has been a professional football player since 2003. He's played in the same system under the same coach and the same team mates since 2004. Vince Young and Matt Leinart have demonstrated more poise in the pocket and better decision making in their rookie years than Grossman in his third season.
On top of that, the Bears do NOT have a very large time frame to win a championship. The team is built to win today and needs a dependable leader to run the offense.
2) The guy won 13 games as a starter and brought us to the Superbowl.
The team is so talented, that they won many of those games in SPITE of him. They did this against one of the league's softest schedule. Their opponents had a .430 combined winning percentage. Of them, only four of them were playoff teams.
Grossman clearly contributed early on in the season. But under no circumstances should he take credit for all those wins. After throwing four interceptions and coughing up two fumbles, he deserves absolutely no credit for the Monday night win against Arizona. In a win against Minnesota, he was 6-19 with zero touch downs and three interceptions, giving him a QB rating of 1.3.
Football is truly a team game. A year ago, Kyle Orton, their current third stringer led the team to ten wins. That's because he, like Grossman were supported by a team that sent eight guys to the Pro Bowl including a league defensive MVP in Brian Urlacher.
3) Grossman is young. He'll get better.
Once his weaknesses were exposed on film, Grossman never was the same. Between the October 16th debacle in Arizona and the Superbowl on February 4th, he never stopped chucking the ball up for grabs under pressure. He never became more accurate on deep routes. He never improved his ability to anticipate the pocket collapsing and he never demonstrated a consistent ability to know when to throw the ball away.
4) The media created too much pressure and placed too many expectations on him. The scrutiny was too much for him to handle.
This is by far the absolute worst crap excuse I've ever heard. Many quarterbacks from Eli Manning to Donovan McNabb to Brett Favre (to whom Grossman is often compared) has been dissected and subjected to intense media scrutiny. Eli, for being Peyton Manning's little brother, as well as playing in New York. Donovan McNabbb for his injuries and off field issues with Terell Owens. Brett Favre for his gun slinger mentality. The difference is that all of these guys did what QBs SHOULD do and handled the pressure. Handling pressure is a basic requirement of every single starting quarterback in the NFL and Rex Grossman is no exception.
If the Bears want to win next year, they need to seriously look at other quarterbacks in via free agency, trades and the draft. Damon Huard and Jeff Garcia both played well with their respective teams. Matt Schaub with the Atlanta Falcons has been an excellent back up that will never get out from Michael Vick's shadow. There's always a chance that you can find a quality starter in the draft, even with the 31rst pick. Keep in mind that Drew Brees was a second round pick, Joe Montana was a third round pick and Tom Brady was a sixth rounder. With such possibilities, how can the Bears not even consider improvement in such a maligned, yet important position?
And yes, this is a ridiculously long post on a very old question. I doubt anyone will even read it, but I don't care. It needed to be said.

This was Grossman's first full season and he went to the superbowl and went 15-4. No too shabby, it took Peyton 9 years to get there and grossman did it early. In peyton's first full year he didn't have better nubers than Grossman had this year so we just need time to let him grow. He has proven he knows how to win and eventually will become a more consistant quaterback.

Rex Grossman is a brilliant quarterback with a lot of potential. He has been doubted all year long. After every bad game he stood into the eyes of every reporter and told them that he is committed to getting better and limiting his mistakes. No quarterback was under more pressure this season than Rex. No one believed in him but his team and he still made it to the Superbowl in his first full season. The Bears will be legitimate contenders for the Superbowl every season he is at the helm.

I'm a huge Chicago Bears fan and i hope they keep Rex. He is easy to hate, but he is still pretty good since he got to the super bowl in his first full season. I think there are a lot worse qbs out there than rex but he gets all the crap.

As a genuine Green Bay Packer Fan and a definite Brett Favre fan..I pray that the Bears give Grossman a 20 year contract and bury themselves with a quarterback that had more ZERO passer ratings in a season than most rookies!! He's a dream come true, a prayer answered...oh and by the way...I LOVED THE SUPER BOWL!!!

I feel bad for the guy but he is trash.
They need to bring a veteran QB (use Brian Griese / Klye Ortin as trade bait) and draft Troy Smith from OSU or Chris Leak from FU or someone.
Have the veteran and Rex battle for the starting job. Have the rookie learn for at least a year. Hand over the team to the rookie his 2nd or third year, trade/ release Rex Grossman.

He still was a rookie and I have to give him another chance. He had all the numbers when he played at Florida. He had great numbers in the first half and then bottomed out again in the second. They will work with him in the off season and I truly believe that DA BEARS will be knocking on the door again. The defense was on the field to long and got tired out .They looked bad against the pass and didn't put pressure on Manning that we expected.
We also lost Benson very early and that was part of the strategy to run the ball against them and ware them down.Don't blame Rex for all DA BEARS short comings.

I actually think that Rex will be OK next year. But in order to accomplish that, you need to have a QB controversy. That will make him play better. Remember waht he did when Lovy Smith threatened to sit him if he didn't perform?
