you would need to check the rules on your ticket as most transit flights do not allow you to leave the airport. I would check with whomever you booked with but as a rule no you couldnt leave the airport.

Yes it is very possible. The train station is literally right inside the airport after baggage. The train ride is 15 minutes and brings you right into Amsterdam Central Station. Once you come out of the train station follow the signs that will take you to Damrak or just ask anyone around. This is a main street leading from the train station. It is very touristy to say the least but from Damrak you can shoot off in to various areas. If you are going in the daytime there won't be too much to see in the Red Light District. In any case - don't be worried about this neighborhood - truth is it is very beautiful with all the canals. And should anyone offer you anything on the street a polite and stern "no" is sufficient. If you decide to take a cab during non-rush hour it would be about 40 EU and about a 20 minute ride into the city center. Amsterdam is very compact and walkable and you can definitely have a nice time there if only for a few hours.

It can be done if you can get of the airport. Don’t take a cab. It is most likely to get stuck in traffic. Take the train instead. It’ll take you to the heart of Amsterdam in about 15, 20 minutes.
Leave the train station (Centraal Station) by the main entrance and walk straight ahead. After about 5 minutes you’ll end up at a round square (De Dam). Royal Palace on your right, war memorial on your left. From there you can go anywhere. Don’t take the last train back to Schiphol. Even trains get stuck over here :)

I remember it took at least 1 hour to taxi/bus from the airport to the city. I would personally talk to the airline when you get there and see if someone wants to take your seat in exchange for the next flight out. You will need more than an hour or 2. Just tell whomever you are meeting on the other end that you got kicked off your flight and you will have to take the next one. Sometimes they will even give you miles or prizes for giving up your seat when the flight is overbooked. That's what I would do, just so you don't feel like you have to rush...you will thank yourself for as much time you get to spend in that wonderful city full of beautiful ladies and bikes and "coffee shops" and museums...ohh you will have fun!

yes, if I remember correctly it takes approximately 1 hour to the central station and from there everything is very near, and all the trams are stationed outside. It is definitely worth it to walk around 2-3 hours, the city is lovely.

That is a pretty short timeframe, but there is a tourism place once you get through passport control that does 3 hour tours of the City. That would be your best bet. I had a friend do it and it was quick, but she made it I don't remember the cost though.

it would be a quick trip, but you might be rushing it. i missed a flight in amsterdam because of traffic to the airport, so you might not want to risk it, especially if you need to get back to the airport a couple of hours in advance.
good luck.
