A lot of nice ones are up in Maine. Rockport, Ipswich, Newburyport, and Gloucester, Massachusetts (all north of Boston) are good. especially Rockport. And some of the islands like Block Island, Rhode Island.

Plymouth, Massachusetts (the town, as opposed to the re-created Plimouth Plantation) was the first settlement in New England. It is still a lovely town and is easily reached by commuter train from Boston. Because of its history it does get a lot of tourists, but it does not seem overrun with them.
