i live part time in both a capitalist democracy and a (communist ruled) socialist republic with a free market economy.
on the whole, i prefer life in the latter. the government is fairly benign and seems to care a lot more about the welfare of the "common" people. also, i have been investing my hard earned capitalist bounty in the free market socialist economy and thus, my family is able to live a much more comfortable life.
poverty is common in both systems, but it seems easier to live a happy, family based life in the republic.
to respnd to mamasquirrel about hong kong, please remember the land prices, rents and how long a $15 bag of rice would feed a family. it takes about $2 a day to be considered middle class in my wife's country. those who can't afford to live due to age or infirmity, and with no family to help them, are usually allowed to live rent free on a small piece of government land. the neighbors are told to keep and eye on them so they don't starve. that to me is what socialism is about, looking after your neighbor.
although corruption is present in both systems, there is less redress in the republic. but again, there is only one group of politicians with their hand's out.

Well...kind of hard to say since the United states claims it is capitalist, but has many socialist programs (and yes, I include corporate welfare among those), and there are so many laws that actually hinder a person from opening up a new business...
Hong Kong, before China took it back, was once upon a time truly capitalist. They had the highest wages world wide, the best benefits, and even the lowest unemployment in the world. Essentally, if you had a bag of rice and $15 for a license, you could start a sidewalk cafe. Companies gave high wages and excellent benefits not because they were required by law, but because they wanted to attract the best workers. The government basically stayed out of their business, so to speak.
So...I guess I would say Capitalist.

Capitalist. For the same reason that when I was growing up, I would not have wanted to go to a school where no matter how well you did the best grade you could receive was B- and no matter how poorly you did the worst grade you could receive was C+.
We have moved toward capitalism and away from socialism and more of the middle class have BECOME rich and the poorest of our poor are primarily people who have come here from more socialist countries for the chance to succeed.

Capitalism generates incredible wealth for everyone. Even the poor in America are better off than the wealthy in many countries. As a result of that wealth comes health care, medical breakthroughs, new medicines, and the list goes on and on. Every socialist country suppresses human rights, the people are poor, and they contribute very little to improving life on the planet.

Let me guess, based on your spelling you're a product of the socialist public school system.
I would much rather be in a capitalistic society. In a socialistic society the government basically confiscates most if not all of a companies profits to redistribute to the non-performers. That in turn creates no incentive to excel, which in turn creates more non-performers

Definitely Capitalist!!! Socialism is for the liberals to dream about. I hate welfare and taxes. I hate the government being involved in my business, in social politics and economy. They need to STAY OUT of my life. This is why i'm a hardcore republican.

American democracy is a blend of socialism and capitalism. When functioning properly, it generally is the best system for the rich, the poor and the middle class.

Capitalist, here's why...
in a capitalist society there's always hope that i can make my way better based on who i am. that room for improvement is what drives the ambition for faith in oneself, rather than faith in the government.
