Edward Jenner in the Western world is renowned for discovering the vaccine for smallpox,. While this was a important discovery, it should be remembered that this method of placing the pus of cowpox into a cut to protect against smallpox was well known method and in use for hundreds of years in the Middle East

Collected pus from dairy maids & injected it into recipients.
I belive that members of King George 4ths family were vaccinated by this method

Jenner found a vaccine for smallpox (I think he collected the pus from milkmaids who had had recovered from cowpox, a less serious but related condition and injected it into a healthy child, before injecting them with smallpox - i think?! An incredibly risky thing to do at the time but it has had huge medical benefits)

Edward Jenner discovered that milkmaids who had been infected by Cowpox did not develop Smallpox. He vaccinated people with live Cowpox and thus they did not catch Smallpox.
